Throughout the month of September, the City of Gadsden is participating in the "Operation We Remember" campaign from the state of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs. At the Veterans Memorial beside Noccalula Falls Park, there are 139 flags—one flag to represent each Alabama veteran lost to suicide in 2023. This program honors and remembers Alabama veterans who have lost their lives to suicide, while aiming to raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. If you're a Veteran, service member, National Guard or Reserve member, or someone who supports them, you can call 988 and press 1 to talk to someone now. Hey Gadsden! 🚒 On Saturday, August 30th, from 7 AM to 3 PM, the Gadsden Fire Department will be out on Rainbow Drive at the intersection by the mall collecting donations for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This partnership between the IAFF, our Local 454, and MDA goes back to 1954. 100% of the money raised goes directly to MDA to support children and families affected by muscular dystrophy. This exciting new phase includes the addition of 2 new turf baseball fields, soccer practice fields, a brand-new concession stand, a tournament office, and even more pickleball courts—all designed to better serve our growing community of athletes and visitors. As one of the fastest-growing recreation destinations in the region, Gadsden Sports Park continues to be a major asset for youth sports, tourism, and local economic development.

Those in need of a quality, quick cup of coffee will soon be able to grab one from 7 Brew as Gadsden will be home to the company’s newest location. “This is a great fit for Gadsden. We’ve got several highly traveled highways and interstates coming through town, so it makes sense to have a drive-thru coffee shop for everyone to enjoy,” says Mayor Craig Ford. 7 Brew is opening stores in 16 states this summer, with work on the Gadsden location expected to begin later this year. The business will be located on East Meighan Blvd. at the former Shoney’s location, and 7 Brew will be investing $3 million to renovate and improve the property. It’s expected to bring 10 to 20 jobs, including part-time positions.

It’s not Christmas in July without a big announcement for Christmas on the Coosa! It may be too hot for winter to be on your mind, but the City of Gadsden is already planning ahead, and we’re excited to announce the addition of ice bumper cars to this year’s event! “We’ve had an incredible response to Christmas on the Coosa since we started it two years ago, and last year we improved the experience with a real ice rink. This year, we’re adding ice bumper cars,” says Mayor Craig Ford. Christmas is only 155 days away, and we’re already getting into the spirit here in Gadsden!

The City of Gadsden will soon be home to a Rural King as part of the company’s continued growth in Alabama. The new store will be located in the Gregerson’s Midtown Center, former home of the Cash Saver grocery store. “This is a fantastic opportunity for Gadsden,” says Mayor Craig Ford. “Not only are we bringing in one of the fastest-growing businesses in the Southeast, but it’s also a chance to bring new life to one of our major downtown shopping areas.” Rural King is finalizing the purchase of the property and will invest $12 million to renovate the building. The new business, which primarily sells home and farm supplies, is expected to bring 90 full-time jobs in addition to part-time positions. Work on the project is expected to begin before the end of the year.

The RISE Project is allowing us to reinvest directly into the City of Gadsden without impacting the city’s general fund or daily operations. This $115 million initiative is made possible by the city’s recent double-digit growth and strong financial standing. The bond funding the project will be fully repaid through the Capital Improvements Fund, ensuring no added burden to our operating budget. As the fastest-growing city in Etowah County, we are proud to continue building on this momentum. Rooted in the Grow Gadsden Plan, the RISE Project is our promise to invest in the people and places that make Gadsden strong. Thank you to the citizens of Gadsden for your continued support in bringing the People’s Plan to life.

The City of Gadsden, in collaboration with the State of Alabama, is proud to announce a major infrastructure improvement project: the repaving of George Wallace Drive, one of the city’s most vital and well-traveled corridors. The project is the result of a strong partnership between the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) and the City of Gadsden since the state and city each maintain different sections of the road. The project will stretch from US Highway 431 / Meighan Blvd to the intersection of George Wallace Drive and Padenreich Ave. on Gadsden State Community College’s campus. The improvement will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and support continued economic development along the route. “George Wallace Drive is not just a road—it’s a lifeline that connects residents, businesses and schools,” said Mayor Craig Ford. “We’re grateful to Governor Kay Ivey and ALDOT Director John Cooper for their support in making this much-needed project a reality.” Construction is expected to begin this summer, with efforts focused on minimizing disruption to residents, commuters, and nearby businesses. Some paving will be done at night to avoid disruptions to GSCC students. The repaving will include upgraded surfaces and refreshed lane markings to bring the road up to modern safety standards. “This is what good government looks like—when the state and local leaders work together for the benefit of the people,” said Mayor Ford. “This project will serve Gadsden for decades to come.”

It's that time again — this Saturday, June 28, 2025, will be another Free Dumpster Day in Gadsden! Dumpsters will be available from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the West Meighan Sports Complex (1420 W Meighan Blvd), East Gadsden Community Center (921 Wilson Ave) and the parking lot across from The Amp (346 S 1st St). Items not accepted: liquids, household garbage, tires, batteries (car, cell phone, etc.), glass, paint cans and electronics/old TVs. You can also go directly to the landfill at 111 Burns Way Drive, which will be open from 7 a.m. - noon for free dumping *with a valid Gadsden identification.* All metal should be taken directly to the landfill. Got some items you want to recycle instead of throwing away? Gadsden Recycles (306 Henry St) will be open from 7 a.m. - noon. You can drop off cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, and electronics. (No glass or plastic at this time.)

The City of Gadsden and Mayor Craig Ford send their condolences to the Guyton family following the passing of former mayor Sherman Guyton. “Mayor Guyton was a great leader for Gadsden for many years, but more importantly, he was a great man,” Ford said. “We want to make sure that Debra, Grace and their family know that we’re thinking about them and praying for them at this time.” Guyton was first elected as Gadsden’s mayor in 2006, and he served until 2022—one of only three men to hold the position in the last 35 years. “During my time in the Legislature, I was able to work alongside him for many years on projects for Gadsden, and it’s been an honor to follow him as mayor,” Ford said. “Mayor Guyton made countless improvements to the city over more than a decade and a half in office. He also helped guide Gadsden through tough times, like the recession in the late 2000s and the recent pandemic. “No matter the situation, Mayor Guyton and his administration were responsible stewards of taxpayers’ money. They left a wonderful base to keep building on, and we’ve been able to continue making great progress for the city over the last three years,” Ford said. Guyton graduated from Emma Sansom High School in 1963 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University. He got his education certification from the University of Alabama and did graduate work at UAB and Livingston University. In addition to working at Goodyear Warehouse, Guyton worked as a teacher and coach for a number of years, and he also owned Sherman Guyton Realty from 1977 to 2006. “In one way or another, he touched the lives of every citizen of Gadsden by making this city better, and that’s an incredible legacy to leave behind,” Ford said.

Gadsden State Community College is one of our city's greatest assets. During her time as president, Dr. Kathy Murphy has overseen increased enrollment, improved retention, expanded educational opportunities and much more. GSCC has also been a critical partner for the City of Gadsden. We've worked together to build the Gadsden Sports Park, establish classes for EMTs and first responders, and focused on building our workforce to help recruit industry. Dr. Murphy recently took a new position, but we want to thank her for her leadership, partnership and friendship during her time here. We also look forward to continuing this great relationship with GSCC and interim President Alan Smith. The future is bright!

The Gadsden Police Department's Records Division is moving to the Gadsden Municipal Court Complex, 1511 Campbell Ave., starting Monday, May 12, 2025. Members of the public will need to visit the new location to obtain a crash or incident report. The Records Division maintains paper and electronic records as officers investigate incidents, records criminal offenses, and documents traffic accidents. This move will streamline services, allow easier access to documents, and provide assistance in one centralized location. For example, if a person is seeking to obtain a misdemeanor warrant, the Magistrate's Office is conveniently located at Municipal Court in the same facility. The Gadsden Police Department looks forward to serving the public more efficiently in their new space!

The First Friday in May is going to be a big one in downtown Gadsden! 🎨 @gadsdenmuseum will be hosting several new artists, along with a glass blowing demonstration and sidewalk chalk displays. In this week's Mayor's Minute, Mayor Ford talks about the success of Clean Up Day, First Friday and upcoming concerts, progress at the Gadsden Sports Complex, city paving, new police officers and more!

The ribbon has been cut on the new Fire Station No. 5 at Noccalula Falls Park! After the ribbon cutting, firefighters held a "push-in ceremony," which is a traditional way to get a fire truck in place to begin service at a new fire station. This new station is on the same site as the previous building, and construction took place alongside the campground renovation. This new station has a unique log cabin exterior, which helps it fit in with the aesthetics of the other buildings at the park. It also includes a police precinct, which will help give the Gadsden Police Department an increased presence in the neighborhood. The City of Gadsden is making plans to update our fire stations, and the police precinct will be a standard design feature moving forward. Thank you to the hard-working men and women of the Gadsden Fire Department and to all who helped us celebrate this event!

ROAD CLOSURE: Beginning Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Chestnut St. will be closed downtown between S 6th St. and S 7th St. (the area of St. James Catholic Church). The closure is expected to last around two weeks. This closure is due to extensive work on sidewalks in the area. The City of Gadsden has been using funding from ALDOT's Transportation Alternatives Program and other federal grants to help make our city more walkable and accessible.

Today, City of Gadsden employees and community volunteers took part in the annual Clean Up Day, and we cleaned up 25.8 tons of trash from across all areas of the city! Mayor Craig Ford, state forestry officials and members of the Arbor Board also participated in a tree planting ceremony at Noccalula Falls Park in recognition of Arbor Day and Gadsden's status as a Tree City USA. Thank you to all the employees and volunteers who participated today, as well as the sponsors who supported our efforts to keep Gadsden beautiful!

Yesterday was Youth in Government Day here at the City of Gadsden. Dozens of students from Gadsden City High School came to City Hall, met and shadowed employees from various city departments, and ended the day with a mock City Council meeting. The students filled the roles of elected officials and passed their own legislation. It was a pleasure to meet and get to know these young people! Thank you to the YMCA and GCHS for helping organize this event!

The Fair Housing Act was passed in April 1968 with the goal of eliminating racial segregation and ending housing discrimination in the United States. Real estate professionals play a key role in that ongoing effort as they have an opportunity to help everyone attain the American dream of owning a home. Mayor Craig Ford and the Gadsden City Council have recognized April as Fair Housing Month and presented a proclamation to the Northeast Alabama Association of Realtors. .An estimated 1 in 36 children in the United States, as well as a significant portion of Alabama residents, have Autism Spectrum Disorder. The Family Success Center is a local organization that offers many services, including supporting individuals with ASD and their families through testing, resources, education and advocacy. Mayor Craig Ford and the Gadsden City Council recognized the Family Success Center for their important work, as well as declaring April as Autism Awareness Month. Thank you! We had a big crowd at this week's City Council meeting as Gadsden City High School's Special Olympic basketball team and cheerleaders were recognized. These young people have competed in Birmingham this year, with the cheerleading squad coming home with a gold medal and the basketball team winning a silver medal. Congrats! Thank you to these teams for representing our city so well, and thanks to all the teachers, parents, classmates and community members who are helping these students enjoy extracurricular activities and reach their full potentials!

This week is National Library Week, and our folks at the Gadsden Public Library are some of the best! Mayor Craig Ford and the City Council recognized GPL Director Craig Scott, LaShunda Williams, Carol Wright and other staff members at Tuesday's council meeting. The library is more than just books—they help with internet and computer access, activities for all ages, resources, services and more. Nearly 23,000 people hold a library card in Gadsden, and last year, almost 115,000 visitors passed through the GPL's doors. The newly renovated campground at Noccalula Falls Park is open, and it's been full of folks coming to enjoy one of North Alabama's best attractions! "This has been a long day coming, and we're ecstatic about this," said Mayor Craig Ford. "How many cities would love to have a park like this?" The $12 million renovation, which was funded entirely by profits from Christmas at the Falls, completely overhauled the campground. The new facility includes improved camping spaces for RVs of all sizes, new bath houses and pavilions, a new zero-entry pool, underground utilities, improved drainage, dozens of newly planted native hardwood trees and more! If you've noticed blue pinwheels around Gadsden recently, those are in support of awareness for child abuse prevention. Mayor Craig Ford and the City Council have also joined the James M. Barrie Center in proclaiming April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Childhood trauma, including abuse and neglect, can have effects throughout a person's lifetime. The Barrie Center is a local organization that assists the schools, community and law enforcement with forensic interviews, counseling sessions and training. We want to thank the Barrie Center staff and all their partners, such as the Gadsden Police Department, for their hard work in difficult situations to make sure all children are happy, healthy and safe!

Alabama has a new Tree City USA following our official recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation! There are four standards that have to be met for a city to be designated a Tree City USA: • The community must have a tree board or department. The City of Gadsden established the 12-member Gadsden Arbor Board last December to work with the city and the public on tree-related topics. • Have a tree care ordinance. • Spend a minimum of $2 per capita on planting and maintaining trees and green spaces. • Have an Arbor Day observance, proclamation and tree planting ceremony. Gadsden will be holding its Arbor Day observance and tree planting in coordination with the annual City Clean Up Day on April 25, 2025. Are you getting a head start on spring cleaning? This Saturday, March 29, 2025, will be another Free Dumpster Day in Gadsden! Dumpsters will be available from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the West Meighan Sports Complex (1420 W Meighan Blvd), East Gadsden Community Center (921 Wilson Ave) and the old YMCA parking lot (346 S 1st St). Items not accepted: liquids, household garbage, tires, batteries (car, cell phone, etc.), glass, paint cans and electronics/old TVs. ALSO, the landfill (111 Burns Way Drive) will be open from 7 a.m. - noon for free dumping *with a valid Gadsden identification.* All metal should be taken directly to the landfill.

Don’t forget that Paden Road is closed for the next several weeks as drainage work continues! This is one of a number of major drainage projects around the city!
